Disability Awareness:
Overcoming fear and misconceptions in and out of the workplace

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

There are 56 million people with disabilities in America. Seventy percent of all disabilities occur after birth and 20 percent of us will join America’s largest minority in our lifetime. The media has long perpetuated the stereotype that individuals with disabilities are either pitiful or heroic individuals who require constant support and are dependent on society.
What does disability mean anyway? Why should I care? In his unique, straightforward style mixed with humor and personal experience, Shayn Anderson will break down why this growing minority group is worthy of note, give some practical tools to help understand disability and how to interact with individuals with disabilities. Attendees will learn more about their own perceptions and attitudes on disability and how it may limit opportunities for success with people with disabilities.
Shayn Anderson is founder of Diversity Inclusion, a training and consultant firm that provides professional knowledge and tools that enhance workforce diversity by creating a business environment that embraces full inclusion. In 2006, he published his first book entitled, The Disability Factor: Five Simple Tools To Better Serve People with Disabilities and his new book, released in 2008 is titled, Taking Pride In That Which Sets Us Apart: A Vision of Hope and Personal Responsibility for People with Disabilities. Having worked in both the private and public sector, he has a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling from San Diego State University and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of the Pacific. He comes at most training subjects from a down to earth perspective and fundamental approach while mixing humor and his perspective as a person with a disability in order to maximize the participants’ learning experience. Please see Shayn Anderson’s testimonials on page
Thank you to Loretta Lee (State of CA Department of Rehabilitation) for suggesting Shayn Anderson speak to SWN and for acting as liaison.
